The deceased woman, aged 34 years, was targeted on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 9 PM GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said. It happened just outside the Bullring shopping centre Friday night The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday, facing charges for the attack. He was previously accused of attempted murder but following the victim's passing charges were upgraded to murder. Law Enforcement Actions Authorities stated officers would be in the downtown area through Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family. Authorities confirmed they believed the attack was a random assault Detectives are appealing for witnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, identified as a Black British national, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, black hat, trainers with a backpack. Incident Location The knife attack occurred near Bullring retail complex, opposite primary access point to Birmingham New Street station. Police said they were treating it as a random violent act with investigators stating efforts continue to determine the motive behind. Eyewitness Reports Shalini Doal, who works nearby, described the emergency response after completing her work period at about 22:00 on Friday. She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", and said co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances at about 21:00. "Many my colleagues take public transport, ride the tramline... our security is compromised fundamentally, here in the city centre." Another individual, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, mentioned visiting to Birmingham fairly regularly visiting his partner resident there, and was concerned about what had happened. "It makes me worried about my partner," he stated. "She lacks transportation and works at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked occurred, understandably, it's horrible."
