If you're craving a slasher-horror film that delivers dumb fun while making you wince, it's likely Bone Lake has grabbed your attention. A recent scary film from filmmaker Mercedes Bryce Morgan debuted in theaters on October 3rd with an absurd premise and a suggestive title to complement.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the finale of Bone Lake.

A Blend of Humor and Horror

Given the title like Bone Lake and an initial moments featuring characters dashing stark naked through the wilderness—only to be shot with a bow in sensitive areas—one can guess there's a lot of comic relief all through the movie. Additionally, the final scenes, which show the central pair battered and bruised yet giggling hysterically in unison, exude a tone of macabre comedy.

One would have to discover a reason to smile at, too, if you experienced what the character Diego and the character Sage go through in Bone Lake. A duo plagued by relationship problems from the start—lack of communication, unsatisfying sex, an disproportionate load of financial responsibility, etc.—their bond is strained when additional characters, the character Will and Cin, interrupt their romantic weekend.

A Sinister Change

At first seeming to be a clash of differences between the two couples—Diego and Sage are awkward and working-class, whereas Will and Cin have a affluent, opulent existence and seem to be making out on all available spots—becomes sinister as the weekend unfolds. Cin and Will prey upon Sage and Diego's doubts in their relationship. They tell untruths and gossip about the other couple, claiming to be aware of an affair and additional personal issues.

These anxieties burst in the biggest way possible when Diego and Sage learn that Will and Cin aren't just here at Bone Lake by chance: they own it and have been luring duos to the grounds in order to get them to stray on their significant others. For what purpose? Since Cin and Will are in fact brother and sister. Following their incestuous affair was found out by their family and they were forcibly separated against their will, they decided to get back at all others (including their relatives). Given that the world turned against them just because of their desired relationship, then they'll oppose the everyone. Will and Cin's goal is to reflect back to all the couples they finally end up killing, in an attempt to demonstrate that their love is just as valid (or invalid) as the connection of these additional duos they try to break up.

Unexpected Strengths

However, what Will and Cin fail to consider is that Diego and Sage, despite their failure to talk with one another, do care for and adore each other. It needed having a murderous couple try to split them apart and take their lives to understand it. While it appears grim, it is not shown that way. Bone Lake's style is closer to satire than true terror.

The story ends with Sage and Diego teaming up to get away from Will and Cin's murderous intentions. What's interesting is that while, at the outset of the movie, you perceive a vast divide in the bond between Diego and Sage in comparison to Will and Cin, by the end, Bone Lake reverses it around. Cin and Will go their own ways to chase Sage and Diego, but Sage and Diego are talking more effectively now. They collaborate to butcher the character Will with a power tool. They then turn on Cin, who dies horribly at the floor of Bone Lake's body of water—but not before the character Diego takes back the engagement band meant for the character Sage that the character Will had stolen and presented to the character Cin.

Aftereffects

After all the chaos of their pair of slayings, covered in bodily fluids, Sage and Diego rest side by side on the end of a craft. Ironically, this is the most intimate they've been since the beginning of the film, now that all their partnership issues have been revealed for both of them to observe, and all they have to hold onto are their battered and bruised selves. As though to confirm their fresh bond and profound insight of one another, Diego reaches over to place the wedding ring on Sage's digit and, when she looks to view it in the light, the couple break into laughter.

It's not hard to understand the reason: When, the character Will offered engagement to the character Cin, it was a idyllic, affectionate instant. Whereas Diego follows suit for Sage, they've only survived a horrific ordeal. Nonetheless, the character Diego's engagement question to the character Sage is not based on falsehoods, simply the realization that they've emerged from the most terrible experience of their time and, following all that, they yet desire to pass the future together together.

Filmmaker's Insight

But, as director Mercedes Bryce Morgan notes, the ending doesn't necessarily mean a happy ever after for Diego and Sage.
